March 2020 Meeting

Our last event before COVID-19, in March of 2020, was when the group went to serve at The Least of These ministries with Dawn Sandoval. To learn more about this ministry, click here.

Soup4Seniors Service Project

On February 7th, we served at the Soup for seniors event put on by the LOA (Local Office on Aging).  We sorted canned soups, canned meats, canned fruits/veggies, crackers, cereals, etc. which had been donated and checked through and packed them into bags to send to the elderly. Above is a picture of the chicken soup can pile!!!! It was a fun event to help the seniors.

Rescue Mission Service Project

On January 31st, we gathered at the Rescue Mission to serve the homeless people there. We peeled, and cut a vast quantity of potatoes for that evening's dinner. It was a fun experience to hang out and serve.

Speaker - January 10, 2020

In January, Mr. Chris Ronk came to speak to us about finances and how students our age can get started thinking about savings, investments, and budgeting. He showed us a few spreadsheets, which showed the value of interest gained from investments, and some other intriguing slides, including a calculator which showed the weight of minor, unnecessary charges, and how they reduce the amount of one's retirement savings significantly. He exhorted us to start considering money early in life, so that we can have plenty of savings when we come to retirement. It was an inspiring and educational talk!

Ronald McDonald House Charities Service Project

On November 16th, we spent the midday working at the Ronald McDonald house. First, the volunteer coordinator told us a very interesting and informative background on the Ronald McDonald House, then gave us a quick tour of the building's dining room, living room, and family room, among other rooms. After this tour, we set to work raking the numerous leaves in the parking lot. It was a great Autumn service project, and it may become a future place to serve at for the Honor Society.

Speaker - November 8th, 2019

On Friday, November 8th, we hosted Mr. Larry Johnson, former Vietnam veteran, to tell us some reflections about his time fighting for our country. It was extremely informative and interesting to hear the viewpoints on the war through the eyes of someone who fought in it. He spoke about the effects of the government taking over more authority in this war, and also told some moving and humorous stories about his war-time adventures as he flew helicopters. It was a great discussion to hear just in time for Veteran's day.

West End Service Project

On November 1st, we served at the West End center, playing with the children there. The West End center is an after-school child-care program that provides tutoring and a supervised, safe space to hang out. Because it was Friday, there was no tutoring, and we had fun playing tag, basketball, and jump rope with the little ones there. Induction Ceremony 2019

On October 11, 2019, 5 new members were inducted into the Honor Society: Grace Cordle, Lydia Lankford, Faith Cordle, Ian Rich, and Nate Giraudeau.
