Rescue Mission Service Project

Since 1948, Roanoke Rescue Mission has been serving the less fortunate & giving them food & a place to sleep. Over 200 people come in everyday looking for a safe place. All of the food they serve is by donation & is mostly run by dedicated volunteers.

Speaker - March 2014

We had the pleasure of hearing Pastor Jim Kistner's testimony & his knowledge about personal finance. A retired doctor since 2001, pastoring ever since, he has been on multiple mission trips to Dominican Republic, Mexico, and more. He attended UVA for Anesthesiology & moved to Roanoke in 1985 with his wife and children. He told us a lot about using your available financial blessing for good & how to practically use your money.

Speaker - January 2014

We had the pleasure of hearing form Chris Cummings, a Home Land Security Agent and a youth leader. He has a very inspirational testimony, proving that God is always good and putting his way before the way of the world.

Mr. Cummings with our Vice President, Ben.

Mr. Cummings shared the struggles he had in college living in the world but not being enticed by it and staying true to his commitment to God.

Food Bank Service Project - January 2014

A food distribution site is the main objective of the Southwest Virginia Food Bank where they deliver to organizations that deal with food insecurities like RAM House and Rescue Mission. The Food Bank assists in feeding approximately 125,000 people a day. This area is the largest region of food delivery with up to 22 million pounds delivered each year. There are a half million people with food insecurities in the 26 counties they serve in our area. The Food Bank operates with 37 paid employees and 1,800 volunteers annually.

Walking in to see what job we will be assigned to.  A group of us will go through donations to check for open containers or any contamination and wipe off the containers.  The other group will sort the goods and check for expiration dates

Speaker - December 2013

Aaron, our historian, with our December speaker Caroline Pilgrim.

Caroline spoke to us about her passion as a Christian: abortion and her encounters with it as a former collage student. She also spoke about the difficulties with being a Christian in college & throughout the younger years. She gave us three questions to ponder: What makes you laugh or brings you joy? What makes you mourn or sad? What rejuvenates you?

Habitat For Humanity Service Project - November 2013

On November 16th, we teamed up with Habitat For Humanity, a mission to build and repair homes for others all over the country.

Man's work to dig 20 deep holes for a hedge of shrubs on the alley of the two houses we were assigned to work on.

Hours of digging through rock and trash to make deep enough holes to plant trees and shrubs.

Deciding whether holes are lined up or need to be redone.

Finished landscaping on two houses, front and back!

Induction Ceremony 2013-14

This year we inducted three new members: Andrew Phillips, Hannah Sells, and Nathan Vaughan.  Former homeshooler, Stephen Williams, spoke to the Society about intentional faithfulness and how we can make a difference in the world.

Straight Street Service Project - October 2013

On October 5th, we were guests at Straight Street, a downtown Roanoke ministry that offers at-risk teens a fun and safe place to hang out, free from noise and crowded living situations.

While there, we learned about homelessness from many angles. We met an officer from Roanoke City Police Dept. that helps to rehabilitate inmates who have recently been released.

Riding in a donated bus, used to pick up kids from the Rescue Mission to bring them to Straight Street.

We visited Wayne, a homeless man, who talked to us about his life story and encouraged us to make wise choices for our future. We brought him a pizza, some water, granola bars, and a blanket.
